Bubble Witch Saga 2 is the latest Major Release From Candy Crush Saga Creators King
If you were wondering what Candy Crush creators King had up their sleeve after the recent release of Diamond Digger Saga on Facebook, you don’t have to wait any longer. On Wednesday May 21st Forbes.com announced that King’s next release would be a sequel to one of their previous hit saga games – Bubble Witch Saga 2.
King Announces Bubble Witch Saga 2
The original Bubble Witch Saga was released on Facebook way back in 2011, and first made its way to mobile devices in early 2012. It was actually King’s first mobile release, and introduced the idea of syncing your progress from platform to platform. Bubble Witch Saga 2 picks up where the original left off, and brings a new brighter look with added game features and new level types to keep things interesting.
On the Bubble Witch Saga 2 Fan page King announced, “Wizards and Witches of the world! A new and exciting bubble game from the makers of Candy Crush Saga has been conjured! Travel the realm bursting as many bubbles as you can in this exciting adventure. Win levels and free Witch Country piece by piece!”
They also went on to introduce the game’s main character by adding, “Have you met Stella already? She’s our good witch from the West. Brave and bold, she loves to fly on her broom at top speed, with her 2 cat companions!”
King Soft Launches Bubble Witch Saga 2 for Facebook and Mobile in Limited Release
Shortly after the Forbes article came out the official Bubble With Saga Twitter account posted that a magical surprise was on the way with a short teaser video. A little while later players in select markets got the option to play Bubble With Saga 2 in their game bar on Facebook. It appears Bubble Witch Saga 2 was available in an even smaller release previously, but as of now the game appears to be available in multiple countries.
A soft launch means that Bubble Witch Saga is available for limited release in select markets. The game app and fan page are restricted by country which makes it unavailable to the majority of Facebook users. In the Forbes article King says it will be available everywhere later this year when it’s finished.
One thing that should be exciting for players is that it appears Bubble Witch Saga 2 will be released for Facebook, iPad, and Android simultaneously. According to all the reports we’ve read the mobile version of the app is complete and available as part of the soft launch as well.
Bubble Witch Saga 2 Game Play
Bubble Witch Saga 2 is a bubble shooter game which is much different from the match-3 style of other popular King titles like Candy Crush. We will admit that we aren’t experts when it comes to this genre, but we were able to notice some major differences in Bubble Witch Saga 2 compared to the original. As mentioned the colors are bright and there is a lot more contrast between the bubbles and background. The bubbles themselves seem larger and easier to aim, and we found it much easier to set up angle-shots off of the walls.
The basic goal is to shoot one of the two choices of bubbles you have upward to match with 2 or more other bubbles of the same color. When the like-colored bubbles connect together they are removed along with all of the other bubbles of that color that are touching. In most game modes the bubbles are all linked from the top of the board which means that you can release large groups of them by removing a chain that will separate them from the bubbles above. The released bubbles fall into cauldrons at the bottom of the board which reward points, and just like the original Bubble Witch Saga 2 has spiders that drop down as you make consecutive matches which increase your score as the bubbles hit them.
In general Bubble Witch Saga 2 has all the game play features that players already enjoy from the original game with some noticeable improvements. Like other King saga games there is a map that players advance through with each episode of 15 levels having a different theme. The levels start out easy to orient players to how things work and get progressively more difficult. As non-bubble-shooter players we had to really start thinking about things as early as the levels in the twenties which added to the experience and challenge. On the current map there are 70 levels available, and we are sure that King will follow in its normal pattern of adding regular updates of new episodes and levels.
Bubble Witch Saga 2 features two game modes, or level types, that were totally new to us. It has levels that require the player to make it to the top like other bubble games, but also has two other level goals which include:
- Free the Ghost – In free the ghost levels all of the bubbles are linked around a ghost character that is positioned in the center of the board. Instead of working upwards to the top of the board players are required to remove all of the bubbles that are surrounding it. When the ghost is free from all the bubbles the level is complete. The bubbles rotate around the ghost as you make matches or hit the group which adds a layer of strategy.
- Save the Animals – In save the animals levels players are required to work their way up to free animals that are trapped in the bubbles on the way. Each of these levels has a required number of animals to collect which usually means the player has to make it all the way to the top.
Bubble Witch Saga 2 also includes cloud bubbles which hide the colors until you hit them. Black holes that suck bubbles in, and Hot Pot mode that is enabled when you burst bubbles six times in a row. In Hot Pot mode your score is doubled as bubbles drop into the cauldrons that are now on fire.
We found that the game play was much better than other bubble shooter games we had played in the past, and think that Bubble Witch Saga 2 will appeal to a wide audience. It offers variety to a catalog of hits that are match-3 heavy which includes games like Farm Heroes, and Pepper Panic Saga. It is also interesting since this will be the second release in a row that isn’t a typical match-3 with Diamond Digger Saga being a collapsing style matching game. We also think players will really respond to the game being available on mobile right away since we always see big interest and demand for the mobile versions of the games King releases on Facebook First.
We think Bubble Witch Saga 2 will be a bit hit for players who loved the original, but also think it will expand to a much larger audience as well. Now that it is available to everyone we would love to know what you think. If you haven’t tried the game yet you can play it here on Facebook, find it for Android, or the iTunes Appstore.
